The Day I Know I Married an Amazing Man
16 November 2017
His phone rang at about 4am and he walked out the room to answer it, I knew instantly form every single cell in my body that something horrible has happened. I walked out the room looking at him, and he said there was an accident. The first thing came to my mind was, any casualties? He said no, I felt relieve. Little did I know, there was nothing to be relieved about. I checked my phone and saw the incoming messages of the images of the accidents, the whole truck slide off the highway and fell into the drain.
He was feeling worried, and said that he wanted to go and have a look at the accident site. I followed him, carried a big bottle of tupperware and famous amos cookies just to make sure we were both stocked up and prepared for anything. The drive up there was dark all along the highway, and as we approach the accident site, we saw blue and red emergency lights by the side of the road. We know, that's the accident site. It was so dark at that time but we could see the trailer detached from the prime mover, and the prime mover was completely damaged, the driver went to the hospital to treat his wound and another one of our driver was stationed there to keep us updated. Hubby went down the car to attend to the Bomba and Plus people there, give them his contacts and we gave our driver a ride to the Gurun rest area for him to head back and rest.
At the moment, our biggest concern was still the accident and the cargo and trying our best to rush the towing companies to get the tow trucks and the crane to the accident site. The truck was carrying liquid, we were just hoping to get the cranes there as soon as possible to stop the liquid from leaking. We made a turn at Pendang and stopped at Gurun rest area for toilet break and a quick breakfast, it was already almost 6.30am. Hubs was feeling more and more anxious about the spillage and was rushing me to find all the contacts possible to help with the clean up, after seeing Andrew's message in the morning I told him to quickly call Andrew to see if we can get the contact of the people who cleaned up their spillage last time. Luckily we managed to get someone, and the PLUS highway people were chasing us to get the spillage clean up.
We quickly drove back to the accident site and the sun was already up, we could see the extend of the damage to the trucks and the cargo, and of course the spillage was bad. Nobody there could help us, other than kept accusing and forcing us to get the clean up done as soon as possible. We tried asking them for help but they all just shook their heads and said it is our responsibility and there was nothing much they could do.
As hours go by, I see Hub walking up and down the highway coordinating with the Bomba people and the PLUS people and of course the environmental people showed up as well. He was wearing his comfy night pants with long sleeve Uniqlo grey top, we rushed out of the house so fast we didn't even managed to shower or brush our teeth. I just tried my best to make sure he takes some cookies and some water whenever he comes up to the car to rest. The environment department people were extremely pushy and kept pressuring us to get the cranes and the cleaning company here, but it was so early in the morning that nobody came, I tried my best to stay in the car to liaise with the insurance people, the adjusters and the towing company to get the cranes here as fast as possible.
As hours go by, and the temperature gets warmer and warmer, still no sight of the cleaning company people nor the crane people, we were getting very anxious. Hubs still had to comfort and kept talking to the authorities on site, I was so glad I have him. If it was me alone, I would have broke down and cry not knowing what should I do. And seeing all the people passing by with their camera phones trying to take down videos or pictures of the site was giving me even more stress that I chose to just stay in the car.
Finally the people from the cleaning company showed up to evaluate the situation, and the Bomba people left and the environment people left. Our controller also showed up, so he took over the situation for a while and we head to the Gurun rest area again to get some food and water. We had a quick KFC bite, as it was already almost lunch time. Then we got calls from the adjuster and also the crane company saying that they're on the way and they're sending people there.
When we got back to the accident site it was past noon, the tow truck was there and we were waiting for the cranes to arrive. The adjuster was also there to assess the damage to the cargo. The tow truck was there on standby mode. Of course another group of the environment department people came again. Hubs went down the car to coordinate with all the people, it was so hot, I was feeling sick even just sitting in the air-conditioned car. Whenever he comes in to the vehicle, I made sure he take some water and cookies just so he don't collapse. I can see he was drenched in sweat in the Uniqlo top. Our drivers some stop by to have a look and see what they could help.
Eventually both the damaged containers were uprighted by the cranes, it was raining white liquid when it happened. We had to get low loader trucks to bring the containers to the customer site and the tow truck to tow the damaged trucks and trailer back to our insurance panel workshop.
It was already almost 4.30pm that time and we had both been up for more than 12 hours, without shower and I was starting to feel ill. So me and hubs head back first while our controller stayed there to wait for the tow truck to tow the prime mover.
I never felt more grateful to have him in my life because I knew everything he did that last 12 hours, I wouldn't have the courage to have done it. Having to deal with so many parties, so much frustrations and so much pressure under the hot sun. Now, we are still working tirelessly on trying to get the clean up done, coordinating with all the parties involved, giving people answers, getting answers for people, handling our insurance claims, handing our cash flow because we don't have insurance for the clean up cost and the excess of the cargo damage cost. But no matter what, if really this marks the end of the company, I know I will walk away knowing I have the most amazing husband that did everything he could, and it was just God's will to let our journey end there.
Eventhough it may be a short journey but I've learned so much from it, and gained so much from it. Luckiest being having my husband by my side throughout this journey. Son, you're father is amazing and brave. Always remember that.
